What Makes A Baby Crib Safe

Written by admin on August 28th, 2010

There are many good crib collections available in the market, Kalani Collection being one of them. Even though a crib maybe very popular, how do you really know if its safe for your baby? How would you know that it will live up to the expectations and won’t hurt the baby? Fortunately for you, I have just the information which will allow you check if a crib is really safe or not by checking on a few very simple thing.

First of all a crib should have a mattress that does not move within the walls of the crib. There should be no missing or broken hardware protruding at odd angles from the crib and certainly no cut outs in the head boards and foot boards.

There is much talk of the use of of the slats. They should be no more than 2 3/8″ apart from each other. trying to pass a soda can through the slats is a good way to measure this. If you are unable to do that, you are good to go. The corner posts are not to be higher than 1/16 of an inch.

The drop sides have recently emerged as a safety issue with cribs. many cribs in the market like the Richmond Convertible Crib are now manufactured with drop sides which can be lowered for the convinience of putting the baby in and taking it out of teh crib. New warnings from the concerned authorities have reported them to be highly dangerous. There fore all parents are advised to stay away from drop sides for the time being.

The last factor you need to look at is the height of the mattress. It is advisable to have a multilayered mattress system. 2 mattress heights is advisable, 3 is even better. Some cribs like the Bonavita LaMadre Collection come with this feature builtin. YOu need to look out for how this feature is supported though. A crib which holds the mattresses with vinyl straps is not a good choice. A spring system is best but metal bars are not too bad either.
