Quick Tips On Buying A Bed

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Once, the bedroom was reserved for sleeping. Today, however, it is likely to also be used for watching television, working on a computer, or just unwinding at the end of the day. Most prefer a bedroom that is not only stylish but peaceful and comfortable as well. To create a room that looks and feels good, it is important to choose the furniture carefully.

Do not try to fit in more or larger pieces than the room will accommodate. Some of the larger beds, such as a queen sleigh bed or four poster can make a small room feel crowded. If you have a small bedroom, opt for just a headboard. You might consider choosing a chest rather than a dresser, placing a mirror on the wall if one is desired.

If you have the space, a sleigh bed adds a nice touch of elegance and a cozy feeling when it is time to sleep. The traditional style features a rolled headboard and foot board, and look best when paired with items that suit its scale. A chest or dresser with a bow front can be very complimentary when teamed with this style.

Sleigh beds first appeared early in the nineteenth century, but they were a far cry from the ones on the market today. They were built for single use and were more akin to day beds. They were developed later than canopy or poster beds, which usually had curtains that could be closed to block drafts. Early models of both types were usually finished in dark stains, such as walnut or cherry. Today they are available in a wide range of finishes and some models even incorporate leather or metal.

Wicker headboards can add an airy, casual feeling to the bedroom. They are most often painted white, which can help brighten a dark room. Headboards covered in fabric can be used for the same purpose or to make a more dramatic statement when a darker color is chosen.

Whatever style of bed you choose, you should select bedding that suits it best. For a four post or canopy bed, a bedspread is a good choice. Comforters or quilts look better with sleigh types. Take into account the finish as well, since pale paint or stain normally look best with bedding in lighter shades.

Furniture for the bedroom seldom does not get replaced while it remains functional. You may well be sleeping in the same bed for several years. Taking the time to select wisely means that you will be better satisfied in the future.
