Saving space with bunk beds

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Bunk beds are an excellent way to have added sleeping space while conserving floor space, but they should be utilized with a certain amount of caution. A recent study concluded that nearly 36,000 children and adolescents are treated for bunk bed-related injuries each year. Between 1990 and 2005 about 573,000 kids from infants to age 21 suffered injuries serious enough to require a visit to the ER. Nearly one half of the injuries occurred in children under 6, but there was also a surprising jump in accidents among 18 to 21-year-olds, who had twice the number of incidents as kids ages 14 to 17.

Almost three-fourths of the kids were harmed by falls, with close to 30 percent suffering serious cuts, nearly 25 percent reporting bruises and scrapes and about 20 percent suffering fractures. Worse yet, more than 10 percent experienced concussions. The study showed half of the children suffered injuries to the neck, face or head, and that children younger than 3 years old were about 40 percent more likely to experience head injuries than older children. About 60 percent of the kids injured were boys (not a particularly surprising statistic!)

There are voluntary safety procedures for bunk bed manufacturers which have been put out by both the American Standards of Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. You need to determine if the bed you are considering meets these standards.

1) Thoroughly inspect and test the frame of the bunk bed for strength. The best test is for someone to climb up on the bed and move around; the bed should easily support an adult’s weight without feeling any movement of the frame or hearing any squeaking sounds. Better yet, make the salesman climb on the top bed to prove its strength.

2) Inspect the whole bed from top to bottom to make sure that there are no potentially hazardous parts sticking out, that there aren’t any sharp edges, and that the entire assembly is smooth. Be sure the bedposts don’t have knobs or finials that can snare clothing and other things.

3) The top bunk must always have rails attached on both sides, even if one side is up against a wall. To prevent a youngster from slipping between the rails or between the mattress and the bottom rail, no gap should exceed 3 ½ inches, to prevent entrapment and strangulation. The top rail should be a minimum five inches above the top of the mattress to keep the child from falling over it.

4) The space between the mattress and the frame must not be more than three inches anywhere around the bed. If there is a space larger than 3 inches, then you will need to get a different mattress. A youngster who falls into the gap between the bed and the mattress while they are sleeping could be strangled, which unfortunately has happened.

5) Ensure that the ladder is well constructed and well attached to the frame. A secure ladder must be able to hold an adult’s weight with no moving around. Once again, have the salesperson demonstrate the sturdiness of the ladder by standing on it and moving from side to side. The ladder must not slip at all.

6) There have been numerous reported injuries in which the mattress on the top bunk is moved by a child on the lower bed shoving up on the top mattress supports. The mattress supports for the top bed should be securely attached to the bed frame with bolts or screws. A floating support system possibly could cause injuries if anything is unfastened and this kind of assembly must be avoided.

7) Occasionally inspect the bunk bed for any loose or missing hardware and replace them immediately. Immediately! During your inspection be sure to check both the horizontal supports holding the upper mattress and the fasteners holding the bed together.

8) You should never allow a child less than 6 years old to sleep (or play) on the top bed. As pointed out above, one half of the accidents occur to kids under 6.

9) Situate the bed out of reach of ceiling fans and light fixtures (both should be obvious!). Plus you should make sure there is plenty space between the upper bed and the ceiling.

An alternative type of elevated bed you might think about is the loft bed which has an open area where the bottom bed would usually be. This space can be used for a dresser, desk and chair, a TV, or even storage. The safety procedures for bunk beds also pertain to loft beds and the same care should be observed when visiting a furniture dealer. If you acquire either type of bed over the Internet, make sure it complies with the ASTM standards.

The wide range of bed frame styles

Friday, December 25th, 2009

In every bedroom there is a different bed compared to the next one, mainly because a lot of people prefer to make their own personal mark on the décor of their rooms but also because this could be the most comfortable and pleasing bed that they have chosen. There are many different styles of beds especially in recent years as eastern and Scandinavian designs have become increasingly popular.

There have always been a wide range of different styles and construction of bed frames from iron and brass to pine and oak woods. Each having their advantages and different types of designs available from basic and plain designs to ornamental carving or shaping involved in some more classic designs.

The metal frames can be quite heavy and prone to creaking over time, metal frames can look stunning though when placed in an Edwardian or Georgian styled bed room. Wooden bed frames have always been popular mainly due to their durability and versatility of being able to carve and shape the frame which can create attractive patterns and designs in the frame.

One of the more popular trends these days are Nordic or Japanese inspired designs, the Nordic influence has obviously been made popular by various Scandinavian flat pack furniture companies but the actual designs have become very popular too. These designs tend to be sleigh beds and bed frames with wide edges that almost look like a ledge around the bed. These bed frames can look like platform beds and tend to have other bed side furniture built in as a part of the headboard creating a uniform look to your bedroom.

There are also many Japanaese inspired designs which are lower to the ground than other bed frames like a divan. The style is very similar to futon beds which tend to be low to the floor also. These beds can have the effect of creating the illusion of more space as the bed is lower down, it is however not very suitable for people with back trouble or trouble standing up as there is obviously more effort required to get out of bed.

Wooden framed beds like this are incredibly popular at the moment and can look equally as elegant in rooms of neutral colours as well as rooms with feature walls or bright colours. Depending on your own personal tastes you may prefer one of these new modern designs or perhaps a classical design, either way it’s important that your new bed is comfortable and attractive in your room.

Choosing new beds can be tough with frames and mattresses to choose from. King-size beds through to single beds can be bought online, delivered to your home for free and all in a short time frame.

The best bed need not be the most expensive bed

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

We often hear of celebrities and luxury hotels having lavish beds with incredibly soft duvets and mattresses that seem to feel like sleeping on a cloud. Just because these people can afford to spend thousands of pounds on their beds it doesn’t mean that the rest of us with more modest sums to spend on a new bed will always have to suffer an uncomfortable bed for many years to come.

There are many more affordable options to get a good night’s sleep and you don’t have to spend thousands, although it can help. There are no two ways about it, you will need to spend as much as you can afford on your new bed, specifically the mattress. The bed frame essentially needs to be solidly built but the main choice for bed frames tends to be the look and style of the frame.

The mattress is what you will actually be lying on and so it needs to be two things: supportive and comfortable. Comfortable is obvious, you need a mattress that adapts to your body and doesn’t feel like it is uncomfortable or springs that don’t have much give in them. The amount of support the mattress provides is something that people are becoming increasingly aware of, many people who suffer from joint or back pain cannot get a decent night’s sleep unless they lie in certain position. There are wide ranges of bed features that can help alleviate any pain from lying awkwardly from contoured pillows to memory foam mattresses, even pillows that are made especially for putting between your knees which straightens out the spine when lying on your side.

When buying a mattress you should be aiming to spend as much as it takes, this will normally mean trying out the mattress in the store before finding out how much the mattress is, a good way to shop for mattresses would be to try mattresses of different price ranges to get an idea of where your budget and your comfort levels can reach a point where you are happy to pay a certain amount for a level of comfort that suits you.

A good bed will last you many years, a good mattress will last slightly fewer due to hygiene reasons, we can sweat up to half a pint of sweat per night and so over time we need to replace our mattress as well as dust mites becoming an issue as time goes on too.

Choosing new beds can be a long, drawn out process with many different mattresses available in single, double and king size beds out there for you to check out.

Make sure you buy the right mattress for you

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

At some point in our lives we’ll have had to sleep in an uncomfortable bed whether it has been at a hotel or even in our own homes, it’s easy to see why they are bad for us by lying on the bed. A bad mattress will be uncomfortable as well as not provide enough support all adding up to a bad night’s sleep.

If your mattress has seen better days then it’s highly recommended that you invest in a new one. Spring based mattresses lose their springiness after a few years and can lose their shape easily. If you sleep on this for a long period of time you could develop back or muscle pains that prevent you from enjoying a night of relaxing sleep.

When buying a new mattress there are a number of factors you need to consider before committing to any purchase. The first major concern is the price, as with many things the more money you pay the higher quality the product will be. Whilst this means you are likely to get a better quality mattress as you spend more this doesn’t necessarily mean you will need to spend vast amounts of money on your next mattress in order to get a decent sleep. Everyone’s comfort levels are different and so when you are looking at beds make sure you don’t rule out cheaper mattresses and take heed of the next tip.

Test the mattress out. We’re not suggesting you ask to stay in the store for the night but by lying on the mattress in the shop you should be able to get a good impression of how comfortable the bed is and whether it is right for you. You should test out the sleep positions you normally lie in, typically on your front, back or side.

Obviously there are varieties of mattress that are typically more comfortable than others like pocket spring mattresses having springs moving independently which is better than open spring mattresses which can all move at once, particularly annoying for couples as one person moving or turning can disturb the other person. Memory foam mattresses whilst expensive can adapt incredibly well to your bodies shape.

It’s important to remember to test out any mattress you want to buy to make sure it is right for you.

Choosing beds can be a tough task, with many single beds all the way through to king size beds and a wide range of mattresses too you should test out as many as you can before buying.

You could save a lot of money by buying mattresses online, with beds from single to double beds to kingsize available online.
