Make Your Bedroom A Haven From Stress
Written by admin on April 29th, 2010When decorating a home, the attention is often focused on the dining room, living area, or the office. Sometimes the bedroom is overlooked, however. A cozy bedroom can often be a haven from stress, letting you relax before bedtime and often leading to better sleep.
There is more to creating a snug environment than just tossing a king quilt on the bed. It starts with the furniture, which can be in any style you prefer. However, do not try to fit in more pieces than the room can accommodate. You need to leave plenty of floor space to keep the room from feeling small and cramped. Extra space will help the room seem airy and bright. If you have the space, a comfortable chaise with a good reading light can be a nice addition to the furnishings.
Choose a bedding collection that will lift your spirits. This depends on your personal tastes. For some, a floral print is the best choice, while others prefer vivid geometric prints. You can also find Oriental designs, country styles, and subdued stripes. Even a solid color can be restful if it is a shade you find particularly appealing.
A large mirror can help make the room seem larger and brighten up a dark area. A free standing mirror can also be functional for dressing, if you have enough room to easily walk around it. Otherwise, you may knock it down and it can also yield the opposite of what you wish by causing the bedroom to seem smaller. If you lack floor space, consider a wall mirror.
Limit wall hangings to no more than one large item and two small to medium sized ones. Too much wall art has a tendency to make you feel as if the walls are closing in on you. Select items that will bring a smile to your lips or help you relax. For some, this might be a dragon painting, while others might prefer a seascape. It really makes no difference what you choose, as long as you have the desired reaction when you look at it.
Be careful that you do not overdo the home decor accents. Covering every square inch of space usually leads to a cluttered look that is difficult to clean. A collection, such as shells, blown glass, or figurines of animals, can be displayed in a curio in the corner. This helps prevent dust from settling on them but lets their beauty shine, especially in a lighted cabinet. You could also use a small round table topped by a glass case to display the collection.
The bedroom should be more than just a sleeping place. By creating a warm and welcoming room, you are carving out a small kingdom that is a haven from stress. Choosing to decorate it in a way that gives you joy will help you to relax after a long day.
